T.R. Doongaji hails from Nagpur which is the city where Jamsetji Nusserwanji Tata started his first venture, Empress Mills, in 1877. When he was around 6-years-old, Doongaji's cousin would take him to the fire temple where, before entering, he would ask for him to put his head to a statue depicting "the founder" placed on an elevated pedestal. The whole thing began when Jamsetji purchased a 10-acre piece of marshy land from Nagpur king and established Empress Mills. (It was established at Bombay in 1874, as Central India Spinning, Weaving and Manufacturing Company Limited. Jamsetji was the founder of a trading company in 1868.)

Jamsetji was not keen on his workers to be working in the filthy conditions he witnessed in The cotton mills of Lancashire. Thus, when he was at Empress Mills, he ensured proper ventilation and had an equipment installed to help humidify air. Sprinklers were installed to reduce the harm caused that could be caused by accidental fires. The entrepreneur also set up a scheme to provident funds that was the first of its kind in India as well as an accident compensation fund for accidents.

In the course of a trip to the US at the request of industrialist George Westinghouse, Jamsetji saw the hydroelectric scheme at Niagara Falls. Jamsetji had planned a hydroelectric project in India and his visit to the US ratcheted his decision. The most popular feature of the project is the 14-acre gardens located in Lonavala. Jamsetji was a passionate enthusiast in the garden, and he brought home seeds and plants from across the globe. "He loved driving, and was a skilled judge of horseflesh, and was proud of his well-bred Arabs, English Hackneys or Hungarians and of his professional turnout. At times he enjoyed boating and sailing, and entertaining friends at picnic parties," writes Frank Harris in his book Jamsetji Nusserwanji Tata: A Story of His Personal Life.

When it comes to "firsts jehangir Ratanji Dadabhoy Tata's accomplishments stand out. From obtaining India's initial pilot's licence to starting the first cancer clinic in the country, J.R.D.
